DAY 68: COOMALIE SUNSET AND BLUE MOON

MONDAY 23 AUGUST 2021

At the same time as the sun set last night, a Blue Moon was predicted to rise.

Looking WEST down towards the Airstrip and back to Batchelor

Richard had arranged for us all to gather up at the Lister Hut, high up on ‘Communications Hill’ to witness these twin events. This morning Norm and I drove back up the hill in daylight to revisit the Hut and its surroundings. The hut originally housed a Lister diesel generator installed by Telstra. Richard now has plans of his own for the space.

Yesterday afternoon, Denise packed some delicious nibbles for our pleasure and enjoyment up at the Hut. Just before sunset we and the dogs all piled into several vehicles for the drive up the mountain.

No sooner had the sun set, we became aware of the golden orb of the blue moon rising to the East of us.

As the last orange/red glimmer of the setting sun painted the western sky, and the increasingly bright silver/white light from the rising moon lit the sky to the East, we packed up and drove back home feeling happy and contented. We all had enjoyed a wonderful evening together in friendship and good company.

A beautiful jade green frog welcomed Norm, Rose and me back to our caravan home.

He soon hopped away without of croak of farewell. This morning I discovered him/her sleeping happily on top of my drink tumbler in the drinks bag.I returned the sleeping amphibian back to the shady garden near the ablutions block where many of his mates are often encountered under the lids of the toilet seats…

Ros

Our once shy and retiring Rosie is fast becoming an outspoken member of the Coomalie Puppy Dogs Association. When Chinner and Carli engage in some rough and tumble games, she now makes an attempt to join in. It is so lovely to watch.

As well as taking a drive up Communications Hill today, Norm and I spent a little time out in the tranquil peace of the chapel.

On the way back to camp we also paused to inspect the survival shelters erected by the young air cadets who were here when we first arrived.

They are very impressive shelters.
