Bungaree is a grand old sheep station, which was first settled back in 1841 by George Hawker. It has stayed in the Hawker family now for 6 generations. As well as still being a working station, they offer self guided tours around many of the interesting old buildings and gardens that have been so beautifully maintained. Shearing had only finished last week, so the shearing sheds were of particular interest to Rosie’s sensitive nose. Strangely, she showed no interest in the freshly shawn white sheep grazing nearby.
STATION STORE, STABLES AND BLACKSMITH
As well as the memorablia from the day when the horse was king, there were also some amazing old vehicles, including a fabulous old military jeep that would stir Richard of Coomalie’s heart.

THE CHURCH
Like so many isolated stations, when labour and supplies had to be transported over long distances over rough tracks, by horse and buggy, Bungaree needed to be as self sufficient as possible. Basic staples to meet their needs for many months were ordered in bulk and stored in buildings such as the Store House we first saw. Housing for the large numbers of workers required to keep the Station running had to be provided, and so was a place of worship.

Our visit to Bungaree was made even more interesting by the many ‘talking’ posts. With the press of a button, interesting oral history was provided, often by Lady Hawker who gave such engaging and funny accounts of life on Bungaree.
