DAY 7 TAMBO

THURSDAY 12 MAY

Tambo is great little town to pause awhile and explore. Yesterday morning, during our first amble around town in the early morning I got to chat to a couple of locals walking to work, as you can do in a small town. They were both so friendly and cheerful. When I commented on the eye catching patterns and bright colours on her shirt, one lady told me that she bought it to celebrate getting her COVID shot. I wish I had thought to ask her if I could take a photo of her orange, yellow, green and red shirt with delightful swirling patterns.

Later in the day Norm and I just HAD to drop in to the Tambo Teddies shop and buy a couple of their wonderful hand made bears for a couple of special little people in our lives.

After admiring the incredible wooden horses crafted from pieces of driftwood we lunched at Fanny Mae’s next door.

Of course we couldn’t leave town without going to the world famous Ben’s Chicken Racing Event at the Royal Carrangarra Hotel. It was worth going just to see Ben, who is such a great character, who reminded me so much of my darling Tony with his querky humour and fabulous beard. The ’girls’ were all preened to within a feather of their lives. To Ben’s amusing commentary, Red, Green Purple, Yellow, Orange, Black White, Brown and Speckled chickens pranced out onto the race track. Finally the race got under way, and I have never seen anything so hilarious as multicoloured chickens running, some clockwise and some anticlockwise around the race track chasing an electic toy car with a bucket of worms on top. Norm’s choice, Pink Bits, the Pink Princess won the race by a full beak. In his excitement Norm had knocked over his almost full schooner of beer as they turned the last corner, but his enthusiasm for chicken racing was not dampened.

I fell in love with the two beautiful pub dogs, the brown MenPaws and the Black Sue (both boys).
