FRIDAY 20 MAY 2022
We have been on the road now for two weeks, and here we are camped at one of our favourite places. The brolgas, whistling kites, ducks, egrets, cormorants, mudlarks, galahs, herons, butcher birds, and other feathered locals have made us feel so welcome with their lovely song and funny antics. One Pee Wee fell so much in love with one of Linus’s mirrors, we had to cover up the mirror to distract the lovelorn bird from constantly attacking it.
Back in Mount Isa, we managed to register our votes in the upcoming Federal Election. The pre-polling booth was very conveniently located, and the process was so efficiently managed by very friendly staff, that in no time at all we were able to tick that responsibility off and get on with stocking up at Woolies for the next stage of our journey.
On our last evening we were treated to a delightful Mount Isa sunset; so appropriate given that we were staying at the Sunset Caravan Park.

Mount Isa Sunset over Sunset Caravan Park
The next morning we left The Isa and continued along the Barkly Highway, following a road train for some time before we could overtake it. The road was rather busy with lots of mining road trains and fellow nomads.

After crossing the Georgina River we turned onto the track up to Lakes Francis and Canellan on the River. Although there were some campers already set up there were plenty of spots left for us to choose from.
Camp was set up in time for a late lunch, then Rosie and I set off to explore our beautiful new home.

Later, as the sky lit up in all the glorious sunset colours you can imagine, Norm set up the camp fire. We then relaxed with a cool drink (or maybe two) mesmerised by the spectacular colours which lit up the sky as if it was a wonderful canvas being created just for us.

Fittingly dinnerwas BBQ Lamb steaks – hence the only thing missing was the sound of music playing – Waltzing Matilda of course.

“.. Once some Jolly Amblers camped by a billabong, under the shade of some cooolibah trees. Along came a jumbuck that landed on their BBQ – yummy lamb and veggies soon for tea…” No I have not been drinking.
This morning I was up with the whistling kites in time to catch the very first blush of the sun rising on the horizon. The stars and nearly full moon were still bright in the sky.
