Yesterday was a sombre, emotional but also a happy day, as the time for the funeral of Paul Bonavita finally had arrived. The memorial service was held up in Darwin at the Thorak Cemetery Chapel. Many of Paul’s friends from all parts of his life came, including of course his family, those from his military days and others from his civilian life. Norm and I first met Paul during our visit last year. On the second day of our current visit, Norm joined Paul, James, Richard and others at the Men’s Shed. Paul passed away that evening, leaving so many people devastated.

The service began and ended with two of the most moving and perfect poems. James gave the eulogy which included Julie’s memories of their time together as soul mates. The cheekiness, generosity, kindness and welcoming nature of Paul were so obvious in her memories as they were in those of others. Julie also reflected on Paul’s struggle with depression and back pain, both legacies of his military service. She encouraged us all to reach out and be there for each other.
After the funeral, we joined the mourners at the wake, where more tales of Paul’s life were shared in a more informal atmosphere.
Denise has been house and pet sitting for friends, so we dropped her back to ‘The River Grove’ afterwards. The property is near Berry Springs and the Darwin River. The house is a beautifully quaint cottage with a verandah from which there are sweeping views across the paddock and to the trees beyond.
