15 – 16 July 2022

Here we are camped beside the Jordan River at Jericho. It is another of our favourite places to linger longer in, when passing through “Outback Queensland”. There were many spots to chose from, but finally we settled on the first we came across. In no time Norm had us set up, out of the wind. It was a perfect afternoon to relax with a book and enjoy the changing reflections and light on the water as the sun melted in a golden red ball behind the trees.

There are many different birds living here, from crows, kites, apostle (or CWA) birds, magpies, willy wagtails, egrets, cormorants and the kookaburras who laugh with such an infectious chuckle. We had become used to the more reserved Blue winged Kookaburras in the north who manage just a cackle. We have also noticed the occasional tortoise popping its head up to check out the world above their ,muddy water home.

It was too chilly to contemplate lingering outside, even beside a campfire. We decided to crank up the oven and roast another one of the great cuts of meat that we bought at Katherine. This time it was the ‘mini’ leg of lamb. Delicious!

There was not a breath of wind this morning and the reflections on the river were picture perfect. Another relaxing day for me; I have finished reading “The Godmothers” by Monica McInerney and am now looking for a new E-book to download. Norm and Coomalie are pretty laid back too.

Norm set up the camp fire in the afternoon so that he could BBQ the last lot of yummy lamb chops from Katherine for dinner. It was just beautiful relaxing in the warmth of the fire as the sun painted yet another glorious panorama of changing colours across the sky.

We have been amazed by the number of people out here on the road in their various vans, trailers, tents, motorhomes etc. There were about 50 Vans sharing this perfect spot with us last night, although we did not feel crowded. Coomalie has been very busy barking at anyone who ventures too close to our camp. She sees her role as camp commandant I think. Fortunately she is so cute that most people just smile and say hello.

Saturday dawned another glorious day with not a cloud in the sky

The noise like a dog barking is the resident Cane Toad seeking a partner

Last time we stayed here, we visited all of the local attractions, however we thought we should pay the Crystal Trumpeters a second visit. It is an eye catching structure that was created by local artists, which tells the biblical story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho. Norm also wanted to show me a cottage that has caught his eye. It is very quaint don’t you think!

We are re-thinking our route home from here and have decided not to continue across to the coast. Tomorrow we will head to Anakie, in the Gemfields for a couple of nights before continuing inland down into NSW. The weather continues to be cooler than usual, and rain has been predicted for later next week as well. The plans might change with the weather.
