DAY 87: IN COOMALIE STILL

9 SEPTEMBER 2021

Last Friday Norm and I popped up to the Coolalinga Shopping Centre, for the usual top up of supplies. Before heading back we paused for lunch during which Norm managed to dislodge one of his front teeth whilst munching on a Ham & Cheese Croissant! Just as we were wondering where we could have the tooth repaired, Richard walked over – he was on his way to Darwin. Luckily he was able to give us the details of his Dentist, just across the Highway from where we were. Sometimes timing is everything.

Norm was able to get an appointment on Monday. Now all is well again in his mouth.

We have been here at Coomalie for nearly 6 weeks; much longer than we had originally planned. This place has a way of drawing you in, and putting you under its spell. Time flies by so quickly and yet so slowly at the same time. We feel so much a part of the place and the community that contemplating leaving is becoming harder all the time.

The weather has been very warm, with some occasional humidity and very strong winds at times. Recently there was a fabulous storm during the night, lightning, thunder, wind and lots of rain. Our friends tell us, though that we haven’t seen real rain yet.

Recently, during the night, James happened to discover a green python in the birdcage, and about to devour the residents. He managed to evict the unwanted visitor and relocate it down the other end of the runway.

Today Denise and James are preparing to travel up to Kakadu and take the Yellow Walter Cruise tomorrow. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures.

Next Tuesday we are planning to commence the long journey home. The COVID situation at home is still looking grim, with about 5 cases in the Highlands, and thousands in greater Sydney and beyond. Lock down is currently in place until at least the middle of October. We are in no hurry to return home to that. Mataranka will be our first stop, then down to the Alice and slowly down the Stuart Highway into SA and to the York Peninsular. After that, who knows…
